NEVER leave a shredder plugged in, is my take. Never.... no matter where it is or what kind of finger-guard it has.
Mine just got unplugged, even though it has a big guard. I looked at it and saw that it would be pretty easy for an animal to bypass the guard with a tongue underneath it.
I think that "auto" setting is a bad thing anyway.
