I think it is pretty cool if the little chi-hua-hua mix can do the job, why not?

They are using big rats to find land mines in Africa

And training Wasps for detection work

I think it's great, I just got this funny image in my head of some unknowing new LEO who might inherit that one, based on the LEO experiences related here. Picturing some poor guy all excited about finally landing a K-9 job, walking past all these kennels of some awesome dogs he's always dreamed about handling, wondering why the supervisor keeps on walking past the cool ones :lol: until he take a look at that last...very small...crate up against the wall.

Welcome to K-9, rookie! :lol::lol:

Having trained terriers since God made mud, I can assure you they are MORE then capable of any sort of detection work. JRTs, in particular, have the knickname of Mini-Mals. They have the drives, heart, courage, physical stamina, etc of any of the larger breeds out there.
Like Mals though, they aren't a dog that just anyone can work with.
I've seen the African Detector Rats on the National Geo channel. !!FRIGGIN AWESOME!! They have a better accuracy record then any dog.
They use clicker training for them.
