What skills are required for the dogs working in the US military today, how many of the dogs are trained also for protecionwork for exampel, and how many type of different militarydogs are there? Is the required skills more or less the same for US and European militarydogs, or are there differences?

The military trains a lot of dogs. Primarily they are used for patrol work, the general law enforcement type of apprehension, scout, track, building search type of thing. They also train a lot of dual purpose, patrol/detector, either drug or explosives. At various times depending on requirements because of war efforts they may also train mine detector, scout dogs etc. 'Right now there is a lot of emphasis on explosives detectors, but that extends to law enforcement as well. As for types of dogs, the shepherd of varying varieties is used primarily although they do train some labs.
