Hello All,

I've somehow found you all here from the other forum.

I'm not anywhere near as experienced as you all, but I do have 47
posts under my belt over at the other forum  Mike S. has been a
GREAT help to me, answering questions via PM on Leerburg - and
it seems Mike, you own this forum :D ?

Anyway, I live in Los Banos, (Central Valley) CA, USA and have a 4.5 month
old GSD bitch, Sable. I would love to - and am doing just that - PP training
with her. Right now, I'm working on groundwork (bonding/tug play/etc.) with her.

So, please allow questions from a newbie - from RAW diet, to bitework, to
how well my FEMALE will do in PP, and if there is ANY TRAINERS
who can check out my dog to determine if she DOES have what it takes...

I admit, I stopped posting newbie questions over there, b/c I was afraid to
get shut down by the Powers at Be...

And Susan, Connie, Greg - Hi! You've all helped my via PMs too! :D

Are these pix too big?

Yeah, but she's not too alert in the 1st image - as she's sleeping

But yeah, she's becoming very determined to follow basic obedience :)

BTW, once she \"alerts\", both her ears stand very straight. I was thinking about
taping them, but at 4.5 months, her ears are doing great! Unless someone
has another opionion?

Hey Mike! Can I be snide? Couldn't help myself after waking up to pink poodles...you deserve it :p .

Welcome Martin! I remember seeing Sable's pics-very nice  .
Martin, Very, Very nice pup you have there. Good luck in future training endeavors.
Hi Martin! Nice to see ya! Love the pup, very pretty girl. :)

I am so glad you did! Isn't Mike's new brainchild of a forum terrific?

BTW, Martin, I am not all that far from you. Well, not that close, but I have at least seen your town on a map! (I'm in Santa Cruz.)

This place is KEWL! Sable's becoming very LARGE, and her O. training will be
stepped up on her 6 mo. mark (4.75 now :p ) ~ so much more questions will
follow!!!

Hey cool. Are there any good/great training clubs around? I really want a
experienced person to eval. my pup!

BTW - my wife LOVES Santa Cruz!!! I was always driving \"over the hill\" to
S.C. in my younger days (grew up in San Jose, CA)

Who doesn't? LOL! Only thing is trying to afford to live here..........

I live in the Victorian neighborhood right near downtown (between downtown and Santa Cruz High), so the best of all possible worlds.......walk to Pacific Ave., walk to the beach/boardwalk......easily explained why I have stayed in the same place for 30 years now!

I hear that there are very good Schutzhund clubs in San Jose and I think there's one near Tres Pinos. I don't like driving over the hill, so I don't. I will need to look up a PM from a year ago to get those club/trainer names.

I've heard that the Los Banos area is really nice too, and without the rain and fog we get here on the ocean.

Lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We go to Monterey ALOT - and a drive up through
highway 9 (into and through Big Basin) from Los Gatos into S.C - to hightway 1 - wow, what a drive!!!

Are there any dog beaches around? Not that dog beaches would be any better
than dog parks. Any thoughts on those? I know at the other place, dog parks
are very much frowned apon

Idealy, a closer club would do, but S.J. is just 1 hr. 15 mins. away.

If you could, Connie, I'd sure appreciate those club/trainer names! Especially
a drive for a eval of Sable ~ I'd drive 3 hours for her

Connie, what club(s) do you belong to in S.C?

Yeah, but 107 degree's for weeks on end is NOT really nice
Dog beaches are better than dog parks because the ones I've been to don't allow dogs off leash. They are just beaches that allow dogs. Florida really sucks for that, we're surrounded by coast and beaches n there's only 2 or 3 beaches that allow dogs. I've been to one, but all the fishing poles left unattended in the water with hooks on, and the jelly fish laying on the shore... well... I'm not crazy about that :)
There are nice \"dog\" beaches here on the Central Coast. I'm just waiting for
a free day w/family to go

Mike, how old was Cujo w/you joined your dog club?

That's true. We do not ever have stretches of hot weather.

I will find that PM. I remember someone from up the coast (Davenport or someplace) was telling me about San Jose and Central Valley clubs.

My guys are just in Ob clubs; I'm starting to learn (via forums!) about special-purpose training after years of basic Ob.

Thanks!!!

How many years in OB? Do you offer services at a price? (hint, hint... )
I don't train with a club. I've visited a Schutzhund club once that I didn't care for, n at 15 months old I met Patrick Murray n have been training with him ever since. Recently met a couple of experienced ASR trainers/decoys a couple hours away from me who I'd like to train with more often, n wouldn't mind forming our own club in the Orlando area, but have never belonged to a dog club of any nature :)
Martin,

I forgot to add that my interest in special-purpose training was piqued because I am occasionally able to join (watch) a person I know who trains police dogs for a city inland a way.

Also, that I am probably still not going to look for an existing club, but rather a helper who has experience and another owner with a helper. I am still trying to decide whether I have the stamina to do that work. I'm not Mike's age!

I function as the unofficial club \"leadership trainer,\" which means, of course, training the owners. They are often new owners and belong to the \"furkid\" group, but most see very quickly that what a dog needs as much as food and water is a sense of pack structure and his position in it.

I'm in no way qualified to evaluate any dog for anything except general energy and dominance qualities.
