Jackpotting a ball driven dog

Grim is my first dog whose ball drive greatly exceeds his food drive.

With a food dog it is very easy to jackpot a given behavior without losing focus during a training session.

How does one "jackpot" a ball driven dog - or do you just have to break and play?

I am talking about introduction of variable reinforement schedules and the dog never knowing whether he is going to get nothing, something, or a lot of something.....

Interesting question!
I prefer the dog is rewarded with a game of tug. I want to be part of the reward, not just the vendor.
With that, I will raise the vocal praise during the tug game for jackpotting.
With just winning the ball, maybe the same or a second toss?
