Ok. Aren't GSDs supposed to bark at strangers/intruders to their territory? So why is it that Jak barks ONLY at the sight of MY CAR (occasionally my husban'ds), or AT ME (or again, occasionally my husband) when I happen to get out of a different car? He doesn't bark at the UPS driver when they deliver a package; he doesn't bark at any of the neighborhood people if they walk by the yard; he doesn't bark when friends oe other family members come over; he doesn't bark at ANYONE but ME! Let a loose dog go trotting down the road and he's all to $hit! Me, and loose dogs (and the helper at training - but that's all prey/play) are the only things he's barked at to date. What the crap?! :x

Sounds like the rest of your family has trained him well...what the hell are they up to when you are gone? ;-)
Damned if I know! Maybe I should actually start recording off the cameras we have installed!

Granted, his barking at another dog is more of a "Get the he!! away from MY HOUSE" ("Arf! Arooroorooroo arf! Arf!" as he stands with head, ears, and tail erect watching the other dog go on about its business))and his barking at me is more of a "Please let me out of this stupid kennel (constant "Arrrrrrr! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf!" for about 15-20 minutes after I pull into the driveway as he bounces from one side of the kennel to the other, using the chain link to spring himself off of)," but still!
Hang this in his crate for "motivation." ;-)

You must ask yourself THIS question my friend:

Would I rather have Stacia's problems (i.e. Achilles, who barks and growls at EVERYTHING), or sweet loveable Jak? People don't visit me, my UPS guy doesn't even ring the bell anymore, and no one walks in front of my house LOL. The minute he sees anyone, be it dog or person, or even squirrel, he uses the window sash to STAND IN THE FRONT PICTURE WINDOWS and bark ferociously. He's startled ME more than once I know he's there!

Of course the funniest time was when a local church as handing out goodie bags and I wasn't in the dining room when the lady came to the door. Achilles went over and stood up in the front window and starts to bark and I hear this blood curdling scream. Go running for my front door only to see this woman RUNNING down my front path and away from my house. I was so embarrassed...

Now if this is really what you want, bring Jak on down for a tutorial  . But I am not responsible if no one ever comes to visit you after he watches Achilles in action LOL.

No no, I don't want all of that; it's just that I never even know there's anyone out there until they come to the door and knock!
How old is your dog? Some dogs don't get that territorial until they are older. Some dogs are sharper then others & tend to be quicker to bark. My female is the usual sentry at my house. She is usually the first to bark at noise inside or out that is not the usual house noises. My male will not usually bark at noises unless my female is acting like there is someone or something outside that shouldn't be there & then he will chime in & go to check it out. He on the other hand will go nuts if he sees anyone on the street in front of the house or god forbid in the yard or anywhere near my truck. Usually a 25+ foot radius. And he lays on the rug looking out the side windows at the front door a good part of the time watching for any tresspassers. Basicaly, anywhere that he can see !!! He is quite serious & VERY territorial. Together, they have all the bases covered !!! No one comes very far up my walk unless they really have to & even then....they don't usually ring the bell or come on the front porch. The UPS man usually places any packages on the bottom step of the porch. Sales people pass by my house. Lucky me! :D The only brave one is the mailman that knows my dogs are well trained & is not afraid to come to the porch to drop off mail & even on occasion ring the bell or come into the yard while I am out in front with my dogs. In the warmer weather with the windows open more, more people outside etc. there is alot of noise at my house alot of the time. So be careful what you wish for !!! :D

He's just turned 12 months. It's not that I want him going ballistic at people or anything. I just found it kind of humorous that he barks only at me and other dogs.
Cujo started developing his "barking at other people" at around 12-14 months... it just kinda clicked one day n I encouraged the hell out of it.
My former GSD start barking at 14 mo. or so, so I think he´ll gets it later.
