Honestly, our Pitt mix has stayed on our 2.5 acre property (mind you he's allowed in about 1/2 and acre) from day one. He's a year and 3 months now, he's only left it by accident when he was still figuring out the winter idea lol.
He's got an extreme prey drive, and we live on a mountain in the woods. Plenty of prey. He's also hard headed, independent and has an incredible nose. Still he stays within the yard and returns to us if he gets to unfamiliar spots.
The reason, he stays?
1. Massive trust and confidence in us.
2. He knows his boundaries quite clearly
3. We used an underground fence to teach him consequences.
1. We did activities that forced him to trust our judgement every day when he was up to 6 or 7 months. Went to our hunting camp walking 2 hours into the dense woods. If he wanted to be a part of the fun he was expected to trust us, and to try his best even if he's scared to fall for example.
2. Now. With this I mean, even today I walk him along his boundary of the fence that hasn't actually worked for 8 months and he gets a warning beep (e-collar) when I see his intention to go over, shocked on a high setting (similar to fence) if he stops he gets vibration untill he's in the yard.
3. Wonderful product to property correct your pup his area honestly. There's no hesitation with the corrections therefore no confusion.
