We talked about the migratory bats getting killed by wind turbines on the eastern part of the country in my conservation biology reading group this afternoon and we discussed how a big part about how to figure out how and why bats are getting killed is by finding the dead ones the next morning and looking for patterns. Well, apparently humans aren't very good at finding the little guys them. So lo and behold, we have bat sniffing dogs!

<<Oh>>

From the man who told us to get labs instead of pointy eared dogs Humbug! 8)

Seriously, I have heard NUMEROUS people say that chocolate labs are not as good as black and yellow labs at field work / scent work. Wives tail or some truth to it?

Of course I also heard people look into a dogs mouth at pigment to assess scenting ability too......and I have never seen any evidence that that is valid; there is a statement in Syrotouk (who also said White GSDs could not do scent work due to pigment even though coat color is not the same as pigment) - but that was from years ago.....and once, again....

Ya know, if anyone gets an "accident" white GSD from their working litter, I'll gladly take it off their hands! Only downside is that darn Murphy's law that says that dogs with white coats are somehow automatically more attracted to mud puddles than more colored dogs. Maybe if it was dirty enough, it could pass for a show ring darling! :D

Though I did find an awesome card I am saving for a teammate who has a stinkin' lab for cadaver work. I must admit it is a very nice dog. It's just......a......lab.......you......know.......

It has a picture of a lab (black of course  ) holding a shovel and it says "If you're happy and you know it, dig up bones" -- going to give it to him when he certifies.

But yes, I have grown to like these here sables.

Well it's proven in Sables: more colors in each hair the more intelligent the dog
I saw a report on the news (ABC) on them using labs to try to cut down the number of pirated dvds & cds being imported/exported in the us.
Here's the article:

See ya'll are bigots. I have GSD's, Mal's, even a rottie (course he's not a pointy ear thing), in addition to Goldens, Labs of all 3 colors, a bloodhound and a Chessie. My criteria is simple, they have to be able to do the job. Why some of my best friends are GSD's. (uhh picture a smiley thingy here)
