Understanding GSD Working Lines

Hey all. I readily admit to being completely ignorant about the various GSD working lines. I hear of Czech lines, DDR lines, West German Lines and so on.

I understand the Czech lines refer to the old "border patrol" dogs and I further understand that these dogs may not be best suited as a family companion/PPD. So I am inclined to shy away from these lines. Is my understanding correct?

Anyway, does anyone here care to give an explanation of what the hell all these lines are about?

Thanks in advance.
