Scent Discrimination

Lately when out in the backyard with my dog I will find a stick that I can distinguish from other sticks and throw it for my dog and he always brings back the same stick to me. I started making it more difficult by throwing it near other sticks, throwing it where he can’t see where it lands, and making him wait for a second before allowing him to retrieve it. Now I”ve had dogs all my life but I’ve never recalled noticing this before. Obviously my dog is bringing back the stick with my scent on it. Is the correct term for this scent discrimination? Is this a sign that I should do something with my dog where I can utilize his scent discrimination abilities or is this something all dogs do?
