Fear of the Dark

I have noticed that my dog has a much deeper and serious bark at night, especially late at night. Is this fairly common among most breeds? Do dogs generally have an increased level of alertness and awareness at night? Is this an innate defensive mechanism meant to protect them from larger predators?
