Dutch Dog Issue.....

I’ve run into a problem that it really perplexing me and I was hoping that some our Dutch members could help me out with.

In the last few weeks there have been three Dutch import additions in two of my training groups. Two Mals and one GSD. As far as I can tell there is nothing to connect these three dogs other than they come from the same country. Although green, all three have had foundation training on both the bite sleeve and suit.

Here is the problem…. When I’m working these dogs, if the handler comes anywhere near the dog, they will spit the bite. If you watch the dog, the second they perceive any motion from the handler, their eyes start tracking where he is and as soon as he comes anywhere within two feet of the dog….. Spit.

I’ve started the handlers walking around the dogs…getting closer and then walking away… With one, we have worked on it enough that we are able to have the handler come in and pet the dog one time. Two pets will force a spit. Even with the “one pet” dog, the stress level when the handler comes around is huge.

All three are really good dogs.. their nose work is outstanding and they have great bite work with some nice solid, calm, deep grips. Any idea what was going on training wise before they came over here that this level of handler sensitivity exists?

A trainer I was discussing this with said that a common KNPV “outing technique” is coming over top of the dog with the leash so the end of the leash slaps the dog’s belly and he is betting that this may have something to do with what we are seeing. I have no idea if this is accurate.

Opinions???
