Yes. I use a separate command to find articles. Through hours of training the dog is taught to locate anything with human odor on it. Article training does carry over into tracking but I don't require the dog to down on the article when we track. I don't want to slow my forward progress anymore than I have to. So, the dog smells the article, gives me the look, then we continue.

The guys in my unit like to challenge our dogs now and then. We'll take a penny and throw it as far as we can into an empty field and time our dogs to see how long it takes for them to find it. In the right conditions, sometimes only a minute or two. Bragging rights for the fastest. It's a stark reminder why we use dogs in the first place.

Re: Introducing Articles

A penny. Good God. If I tried that, the snipe would surely swallow it just to make sure I wouldn't take possession of it ever again. Hell, not too long ago she ate a piece of memory foam just because she saw me picking up pieces of a matt from the ground. Well, surely if I wanted them she must have it too. A.S.S.H.O.L.E.

Well to bring this back to what the OP asked about, I basically did what Leslie suggested but started on a platform. Three separate sessions. First, on a platform. Second, in front of me on the ground. Then this one separating her from it.

Re: Introducing Articles

Excellent work MAtt.

In SAR we often used teeth.

I like the idea of very small articles like teeth, coins, keys etc.

I believe they can bring the dog in tighter to the article.

Thunder has found my car keys in boot high grass in a 2-3 acre field after I looked for an hour myself.

He took less then a min and he was standing over the keys and patting the ground and barking.

After that I used an old set of keys that I would toss in a field and bring Thunder out the next day to find them.

Re: Introducing Articles

Nice work on the key find!

One thing I saw, if I may comment.

You mentioned in the video about Sali finding the spot where you were tossing articles.

I was glad to see her work that out. It showed she doesn't rely on a track to get to an article.

In training often people can get in a habit of dropping the article while walking around the field, etc.

Some dogs can become dependent on a track to bring it to the article id it's done to often.

Re: Introducing Articles

Yeah my dobes do that. They start off looking for track scent then when they don't find any they start using their eyes, then when that fails they use their noses. I trained them tracking first. So when it came to Sali I trained her property search first. The unfortunate off spin of that is she tracks like an express train and doesn't do so well. She casts alot as well so IPO type tracking is off the table I feel.
