Drives/Mals

Recently i was after a Malinois pup and was looking in the UK for one when what i perceive as a problem came to light. To me the first drive a Malinois should have is defence then defence then defence and a bit of prey after that,to my total disgust most of the Malinois been bred there i found were the other way round! i am wondering is it the same in the States? and if so is it because people want the energy and athletic ability of the breed without what i consider the core of the breed defence drive. The reason i didn't go to Belgium or the Netherlands is due to restriction on importing because of rabies the youngest we can import a pup from Europe to Ireland is 9 months or so
good luck
Tommy
