Kong vs Ball

So I notice with one of my pups that he is CRAZY about the kong... but if he knows I also have a ball on a rope in my pocket, he'll chase after the kong, stop short in a "damnit, he fooled me again" way, turn around and run back to me looking for the ball.

He hasn't had much time with the ball compared to the amount he's had with the kong. The kong is much more bouncey and animated than the ball is when I throw it, but he just goes nuts for the ball.

I know each dog has their preference for the toy they like, and its not really important either way, but I am just amused that there is such a strong desire to play with a ball that, in all logic, is less interesting to play with than the bouncey animated kong. Normally I see a very minor preference for one toy over another, usually it is a ball vs tug preference, but never seen such a strong preference for a ball over a kong.

Can anyone offer up a reasonable explanation as to why a dog would prefer a ball? Color? Size? Some type of genetic predisposition to really liking balls?

See, one of my theories is that he knows he's only got 1 testical, so he's always on the look out for that missing ball. But who knows.......
